New Principal

Central Middle School welcomes new principal

OROVILLE -- Central Middle School will welcome a new principal next school year, with the Oroville City Elementary School District officially selecting Don Phillips for the position at its Wednesday evening board meeting.
"We're absolutely ecstatic," said Superintendent Penny Chennell-Carter. "Don will bring energy, vision and a sense of excitement to Central."
Phillips, a former Oroville resident, is currently serving as an associate professor and Director of Graduate Education Programs at Point Loma University in Arcadia.
The six-foot-seven-inch Phillips, who received his teaching credential from Chico State University, has prior experience as an elementary, middle and high school principal, adding that middle-school students are his favorite age group.
"Most of my adult life has been spent working with middle school students and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with them again," Phillips said.
Phillips called the move to Central Middle School and Oroville a "homecoming" for his family, who moved away from the area about 15 years ago.
Phillips was a youth pastor at the Nazarene Church prior to leaving Oroville.
Although he admitted there are "always challenges" in middle schools, Phillips said he is looking forward to serving as an "encourager" to Central's students.
"I want to come in and be a positive influence when it's really needed," Phillips said. " Middle school is a really critical time for students."
Phillips will officially step into his new role July 1, filling the spot vacated by Rick Hilliard, who retired earlier this year.
Two interim principals have been rotating at Central since that time, and will finish out the rest of the school year.
